Tamar NRM partnered with local Landcare volunteers and community members to deliver a community planting day at Woods Reserve in West Launceston—an event grounded in both ecological restoration and community connection.

Woods Reserve plays an important role in linking surrounding bushland corridors, supporting the movement of native species and strengthening overall ecosystem health. Building on more than 30 years of local Landcare stewardship, this project focused on restoring the reserve’s understory through targeted native planting—improving habitat quality and increasing biodiversity. On the day, community members planted a variety of distinct native grassy, herb and shrub species, carefully selected to rebuild habitat, attract pollinators, and restore structural complexity.

The event brought together residents, volunteers, and project partners to share knowledge, provide hands-on experience with restoration efforts, and celebrate the ongoing care of this valued local space. Participants learned directly from Tamar NRM staff and experienced Landcare members while strengthening their connection to the landscape and each other.

Alongside ecological outcomes, the day reinforced the importance of community-led environmental action—supporting knowledge sharing, encouraging stewardship, and creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get involved.
Key outcomes:
13 native grassy, herb and shrub species planted to restore understory structure.
Improved habitat quality and biodiversity within the reserve
Strengthened habitat connectivity across the West Launceston reserve network
Increased community engagement and environmental stewardship
Knowledge sharing between long-term volunteers and new participants
