The Great Regional City Challenge asks the region to submit projects, to vote to find the best projects and to fund projects that will help this region be, not just good, but great!
Tamar NRM has three projects in this year's Great Regional City Challenge and we need your support!
Voting closes 28 May 2023!
Check out our projects:
Community Connection for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Tasmanians
Enabling new Tasmanians with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to engage and connect with the broader Tasmanian community and environment.
OPPORTUNITY: The Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Community Connections Working Group (CALDCC) of Tamar NRM is seeking funds to help provide opportunities for migrant and refugee groups and individuals to connect and engage with the broader Tasmanian community through the provision of transport and interpreters. Access and understanding are significant barriers to community engagement.
FUNDS NEEDED: The project is seeking $10,000 to support members of the migrant and refugee communities in Launceston and surrounding areas to access and take part in a range of community events and activities. The funds will be split evenly between the provision of transport - usually buses - and interpreters from various language groups to help participants fully engage in the activities. This will create opportunities for engagement, understanding, and the building of relationships between 'new Tasmanians' and the broader community.
WHY WILL IT SUCCEED?: The CALD CC Working Group was established in 2023 through a partnership between the Women's Friendship Group (a refugee resettlement support group), Tamar NRM and a number of community volunteers. All the partners have strong connections throughout the community and will provide opportunities for participants to take part in the many social, educational and environmental opportunities available in the region.
Great Tamar Tree Trail
A community selected virtual trail of the Tamar Valley’s favourite trees linked by QR Codes to City of Launceston’s website
OPPORTUNITY
The City of Launceston could become a Great Tree City of the World by engaging its residents in a region-wide celebration of their favourite trees.
Trees in any village, suburb or township in the City of Launceston, West Tamar, George Town and Meander Valley LGA’s may be nominated for selection.
FUNDS NEEDED
Funding for this project includes 100 metal plaques printed with a project logo and individual QR code. Information about the trees is stored on City of Launceston’s web site and will be compiled and maintained by Tamar NRM. 100 plaques are costed at $7000 for materials and installation on a secure post. Community members whose nominated tree is selected will receive certificates, costing $500 and a mention on the plaque and website.
Other costs of $2500 for printing of display posters, and a community picnic under the trees in City Park to announce the winners. Total funding sought is $10,000.
WHY WILL IT SUCCEED
Tamar NRM has successfully delivered community-led and activity-based projects in biodiversity, environmental education, and sustainability for 25 years on behalf of the councils of the Tamar Valley.
To expand awareness of urban, suburban, and rural treescapes, Tamar NRM will use technology to connect, locate, protect, and celebrate our valuable tree assets with residents and visitors alike.
Tamar Region Through the Lens – showcasing our natural treasures (Youth project)
Production of 10 to 15 video clips highlighting the natural wonders of the Tamar and Meander Valley regions.
PROBLEM/OPPORTUNITY: Tamar NRM will promote the natural wonders of Tamar and Meander Valleys through the production of up to 15 short video clips, which will be deployed on social media platforms and websites. A local videographer will be engaged by Tamar NRM for this project.
FUNDS NEEDED: Video is the ideal medium to showcase the natural, environmental, landscape and scenic wonders of the local region and share them widely to a domestic and international audience A budget of up to $1000 per video clip includes on-site visual and audio capture, plus editing and post-production. These clips will be formatted for specific platforms as required - website, social media platforms and YouTube. Travel and studio editing allowances for the videographer are included in these cost estimates. We are seeking $10,000 to fund the project and provide a wide selection of imagery.
WHY WILL IT SUCCEED?: Tamar NRM is an established natural resource management organisation funded by the City of Launceston, West Tamar and George Town Councils. We have strong community connections across the Tamar and Meander Valleys. This project will promote the natural wonders of the region to the world and enhance the Tamar region's reputation as a wonderful place to live, work and explore.
