Since first launching the Kanamaluka Network, things are in full swing! We continue to make improvements to the webpage, which you can see by following this link.

There is no shortage of events and projects coming up - here are a couple we'd like to share with you:

National Tree Day is coming up on the 26 July. There are currently two events registered for network participants to get involved with.

  1. The Friends of Riverside will be holding an urban waterway replanting day at Walkers Orchard Reserve in Riverside (1 New Ecclestone Road). This will be running from 10 am to 12 noon. The activity aims to restore a variety of native flora to a waterway in an increasingly urban setting. The planting also increases connectivity across Riverside, linking up with previously revegetated urban green spaces further downstream. This is great for both waterway health and Tasmanian biodiversity! Please see our Events page to register!

  2. The University of Tasmania will be kicking off their Ecological Restoration Project at the UTAS Inveresk campus, with the session running from 10 am to 2 pm. This is an incredibly exciting project that aims to convert a flat lawn into a biodiverse area that mimics six local native plant communities. The project will plant over 3,000 native plants and direct seed over 800 m2 with the goal of establishing dense areas of native plants that suppress weeds and provide habitat for insect populations. This is a large project and will have ongoing working bees with UTAS's Lars Roberts and Jeff McClintock every Monday until the job is done. Please see our Events page for more information.

Groups such as the Friends of Carr Villa, Friends of Cambridge Street, Friends of Trevallyn (and more!) all have monthly working bees in some very special local native bushland reserves. You can find out where and when by checking on our events page. If you would like more information or to be connected with a group, please reach out!

We are also excited to announce some upcoming weed identification sessions with Axel Meiss of Island Regen. Axel has a wealth of experience managing an array of invasive plant species, and will be able to answer all your control-related questions. The dates for these sessions are Monday 21 September for the West Tamar session, and Saturday 26 September for the East Tamar session. Again, see the Events page for more details and registration!

As the year is flying by we have also decided to lock in a date for our first-ever Kanamaluka Network Volunteer Appreciation Day. The aim of this event is to get those who care for the region together, celebrate their hard work, and provide an informal chance to share stories and connect. The date we have pencilled in is Thursday 3 December, between 11 am and 1 pm. And yes, everything you need to know will be on the Kanamaluka Network Events page.

In the not-too-distant future, these posts will be sent as email newsletters on the Kanamaluka Network mailing list, so please take the chance to join that list at https://www.tamarnrm.com.au/kanamaluka-network to get all the Kanamaluka Network News and updates.
