Garden Island Landscape Rehabilitation Project

Tamar NRM is project managing the landscape rehabilitation of this interesting place in the Tamar Valley

Tamar NRM is excited to announce that from June 2026, we will be leading the landscape rehabilitation of Garden Island, near Kelso in the West Tamar.

Garden Island within it's regional context.

While currently maintained to allow access to critical shipping infrastructure in the Estuary, TasPorts recognises that the island also has important recreational amenity for locals and travellers alike.

The redevelopment aims to protect and increase Garden Island’s natural values, while being respectful of the existing ways in which many connect to this interesting place.

The ensure the redevelopment is grounded in community, stage one of the planning phase will consist of a series of community engagement activities, giving opportunities for feedback and input on the master redevelopment plan. These will be rolled out over the coming months and consist of online surveys, on-site conversations and the direct submission of stories and ideas.

Stage two of the redevelopment will seek to revegetate certain areas of the Island from Autumn of 2027, with provision for additional infrastructure to increase visitor amenity, depending on the outcomes of stage one.

This is an exciting project for Tamar NRM, TasPorts and the broader West Tamar community. We look forward to learning more about the space and using that to inform the site redevelopment.

Keep an eye out for opportunities to engage with this project! If you are a Garden Island user and would like to tell us about it, we would love you to contact us at admin@tamarnrm.com.au or use the form here
