About the event
Tamar NRM is launching a new volunteering program, the Kanamaluka Network!
The Kanamaluka Network brings together community groups, volunteers and local organisations to care for the Tamar catchment. Inspired by Bushcare programs across Australia, it connects people with nature while strengthening community resilience. By working together across the catchment, we protect natural spaces, support biodiversity and create meaningful opportunities for people of all ages to get involved.
We are launching this program with a lunch on the 5th of June. Our guest speaker on the day will be Dr. Emily Flies, Senior Lecturer at the University of Tasmania. A few words about Dr. Flies:
Emily grew up in upstate New York where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and psychology (2001-2005). After a few years of teaching outdoor education, she became passionate about the relationships between human health and the health of our environment. Emily completed a master’s degree in disease ecology (Michigan State University, USA, 2008-2011) and a PhD in disease ecology and epidemiology (University of South Australia, 2012-2016). Now, as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Tasmania, Emily studies how engaging and connecting with nature (through individual practice and online sustainability education), can benefit both human wellbeing and sustainability. She co-leads the ‘sustainable people-environment interactions’ research theme of the National Environmental Science Program’s ‘Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub’. She is also an Associate Investigator in the Healthy Environments and Lives Network, which seeks to make healthcare more equitable, sustainable and resilient to environmental change. Emily teaches about sustainability at UTAS, and has founded and directed two not-for-profit science communication organisations, and Tasmania’s Inspiring Women in STEMM Fellowship Program.

We are so excited to hear from Emily about her work on the day! Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Doors to the venue will open at 11.30, with introductions beginning at 12 noon. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Tamar NRM is extremely proud of this program, and can't wait to see it officially presented to the community members and volunteers who bring so much value to our work. We would love your company for this big day, and hope to see you there!
