This month (July) Tamar NRM and Plastic Free Launceston are launching their November event Catch it in the Catchment
The project aims to activate communities within the Tamar Estuary catchment to participate in a clean-up event on the same day and at the same time.
The event, supported by Clean Up Australia Day, takes place on Sunday, November the 10th from 9am – 12pm and invites community groups, sporting groups, schools, businesses and individuals to help restore our beautiful Tamar estuary. Selected ‘Hub areas’ along the Tamar will provide a meeting point for participants to gather for a BBQ after the clean-up, be thanked for their efforts, celebrate and provide feedback for what we hope will become a yearly event.
Why ‘Catch it in the Catchment’? We now know that 80% of all marine plastics come from the land. As water moves across urban and rural areas in a catchment, litter is picked up and finds its way into waterways and then on into marine environments or freshwater bodies of water.
This figure is alarming, however we believe we can turn it in to a positive! If 80% of plastics, not to mention other litter, makes its way to the ocean via waterways, by stopping, or catching it in the catchment, we can significantly reduce this source of marine pollution.
The issue of plastic pollution is gaining a ground swell of support as communities gain a growing understanding of its impact. It is anticipated that the Tamar communities will feel they are participating in an event where their actions are a significant part of the solution to this problem. The flow on effects, with further promotion, will be to increase education that targets behavioural changes in the use and disposal of plastic and other wastes.
